Don’t you hate it when work gets in the way of you playing the ponies? That’s what happened to Doug Massie on Saturday before he took down top honors in the Fox Gambler’s Paradise Handicapping Contest at River Downs.
Massie, who works for Delta, was delayed in getting away from work on time when his boss asked him to help unload one last truck. Massie arrived at the River Downs Clubhouse, still in his safety vest, just minutes after the first race. Luckily the winner was the favorite and there were seven races left to play.
As a storm turned the track from fast to sloppy, Massie found a “mudder superior” in the 5th race that earned him a total of $37.20. That sum along with three other winners kept him on top all day. For his last-minute efforts, he was glad to receive the grand prize from event coordinator, John Engelhardt - a “Day at the Races” for four in the President’s Box in the River Downs Clubhouse and a package to Belterra Casino Resort that includes a overnight stay, free buffet and a round of golf… Doug, enjoy your “Gambler’s Paradise!”
